The Child and Adolescent Mental Health Service (CAMHS) includes teams for the entire southern region which covers the geographical boundaries from Port Melbourne to Portsea to Pakenham.

What is the Child and Adolescent Mental Health Service?
The service provides an outpatient service for children and adolescents aged 0 - 18 years of age, and families who are experiencing emotional, behavioural and social difficulties. Inpatient service provides residential milieu therapy and treatment to adolescents aged 12 -18 years.

Vision
Into the 21st century, Southern Health seeks to strengthen mental health service provision to its child and adolescent population through staff training and development, uptake of leading edge research, stakeholder involvement and continuing service improvement.

Mission Statement
Within the public mental health system, our mission is to:

  • Provide service excellence in all areas of child & adolescent mental health;
  • Actively facilitate access and responsiveness to all levels of mental health service intervention including;
    • Ensuring priority of service delivery to the most serious mentally ill children and adolescents and those most at risk of developing severe mental illness, particularly where there is a danger of self harm associated with mental illness, and / or risk of suicide;
    • The provision of psychiatric expertise to other severely disturbed children and adolescents in partnership with other agencies responsible for their care;
  • Advocate for improved child and adolescent mental health;
  • Promote mental health and the prevention of mental illness in children and young people and attract and sustain resources for research into child and adolescent mental health and provide the findings of such research to provide better care and treatment.

Assessment Services
Specialised assessment services are available in the following areas, psychological assessments, family psycho-social, speech and language, learning and developmental assessments, autism and spectrum related disorders.

These assessments involve seeing the child and parents or the whole family for one or more sessions.

Academic Centre for Developmental Psychiatry.
The Child and Adolescent Mental Health Service is located within the grounds of Monash Medical Centre in Clayton, and is co-located with the Monash University Centre for Developmental Psychiatry, providing a range of academic research, teaching and special clinical initiatives in the fields of autism, developmental disabilities, school refusal, sexual abuse and families with young babies.

Southern Health Child and Adolescent Mental Health Services has affiliations with Adult Mental Health Services, Alfred CAMHS, community based agencies, GPs and paediatricians to provide shared care of clients within the service.

The CAMHS Service has a wide range of training and educational activities at the team, service and network levels. As well as a formalised clinical supervision process, CAMHS staff are encouraged to participate in all clinical, training and research activities.

Clinical Components of the CAMHS Service.
The service has several clinical components such as community outpatient assessment and treatment teams located in Dandenong, Casey and Frankston; an Intensive Day Program Service; Mobile Youth Outreach Service; Consultation and Liaison Service; 15 bed inpatient assessment and treatment service and a Mental Health Promotions Officer.

Southern Health Child & Adolescent Mental Health Service has a dedicated Mental Health Worker to work with high risk adolescents who are Department of Human Services clients.
