History

Cardinia Community Health Service was originally a bush nursing station, called Mountain District Bush Nursing Station in Cockatoo. The local community had lobbied for this service for several years before it was officially opened in 1964.

The original centre in Cockatoo has expanded to accommodate community based health, welfare and support services. The original district nurse employed by the former bush nursing association still works from this centre.

In 1992 the service opened an outlet in the expanding town of Pakenham in the south eastern growth corridor. This year the Bunyip Community Health Service was amalgamated into the corporate structure of the Cardinia Community Health Service.

The organisation now provides services within the Shire of Cardinia from the three centres. Services provided include: district nursing, community health nursing, counselling, domestic violence services, youth health, occupational therapy, podiatry, physiotherapy, dietetics, adult day and support services, speech pathology, family day care services and a range of health promotion/illness prevention services.

The approach to health that the service utilises is a holistic one, with a strong emphasis on social aspects of health and disease. Because of the rural nature of the catchment area, eighty per cent of the services provided are outreached to where people can easily access them.
