Monash Medical Centre
(Clayton) is one of the State's major teaching
and referral hospitals, and is the largest within the Southern Health providing specialist care to the State's south-east.
The Monash Medical Centre was formed in 1987 as the result of the amalgamation of three pre-existing hospitals, the Queen Victoria Medical Centre, Prince Henry's Hospital and Moorabbin Hospital.
Its creation was a response to the great demographic changes which have occurred in Melbourne over the past decade, and part of a broader plan to enhance services to meet the health care needs of the next century.
In 1995 it joined with Dandenong Hospital, Kingston Centre, Sandringham & District Memorial Hospital, and Hampton Rehabilitation Hospital to form the Southern Health Care Network. In July 2000, the organisation changed to become Southern Health - Victoria's largest Metropolitan Health Service. (Sandringham Hospital is now part of Bayside Health).
Clayton Campus focuses on medical services requiring complex and
multi-disciplinary activity and significant technological support.
The Moorabbin Campus has developed as a less intensive hospital offering a
range of services including elective and short-stay care, with a strong emphasis on
Women's Health. Radiotherapy is now offered at Moorabbin through the Peter MacCallum
Cancer Institute, with additional cancer services also offered at the site.
The Medical Centre cares for people of all ages and most illnesses - whether its a child with leukaemia, a middle aged man with heart disease or a pregnant woman with an at risk pregnancy. No other hospital in Victoria provides the same range and depth of service.
The Medical Centre is also a teaching hospital for under graduate and post-graduate medical students, nurses, allied health professionals and other hospital related careers.
The Medical Centre is a centre for research, particularly within the eight Monash University Departments based at the Medical Centre, Prince Henry's Institute of Medical Research, Monash Institute of Medical Research and the Monash Institute of Health Services Research.
